Supergirl Lives Recap

How is Maggie and Alex's relationship doing? Is the Guardian still hot on the streets with Winn in the van? Are Mon-El and Kara going to finally talk about that kiss? All is revealed tonight in Kevin Smith's directorial debut on Supergirl! Tonight's episode is filled with great moments and was so welcomed after such a long break! Here are the moments that stood out to us:

  1. Winn Gets a Gun in the Face: Being that this is a superhero show and we see so many guns and weapons and fights, it can be easy to overlook the fear that happens when a gun is pulled. Especially when our heroes are bulletproof. Winn was genuinely scared and had every right to be.
  2. Alex and Maggie Happy: Well we knew we were going to get more moments with Alex and Maggie and this was a welcomed scene! Seeing Alex so happy with Maggie was something Alex so very much deserved! Very cute and Alex's apartment is smashing!
  3. Alien Hologram Face: For some reason, this stood out to us. It seemed smart that aliens with advanced technology would use some form of holographic tech to hide their non-human faces. Also, when Kara and Mon-El went through the portal, it had this distinct feeling of being Kevin Smith. It felt like adventure!
  4. Powerless Supergirl: It is a storyline that is often told, but it always seems to have merit to us. It is something that can define Supergirl's character in a way that can't be defined when she has her powers. Kara is a hero not because of her powers, but because she chooses to be. Just like in the first episode when Clark wanted Kara to choose the hero's life for herself.
  5. Winn Is Scared in Locker-room: We love seeing this season expand on Winn's story. We've said it before that his story is one that should be further explored and Jeremy Jordan's ability to bring some of the tough acting challenges to the screen stand out incredibly well. He is very talented.
  6. Roulette & Dominator: Roulette certainly has self-preservation down to a science. A planet with diamonds like dirt, too bad its a slavers' moon! It was really cool to see the Dominator there too! Buying humans with a certain blood type? Could they be testing for Meta-Human blood?
  7. Winn on Location: Again, for us, seeing more of Jeremy Jordan's ability to bring out the emotions in a scene is always welcomed, and he was crushing it in this scene with Chyler!
  8. Jailbreak: This whole scene made the episode for us! First you have Kara being a true hero inspiring others (which is her best power), then you have the Dominator and he recognizes Mon-El! Then Winn is a bad a**, because let's face it, he's not the red-shirt! And you have Kevin Smith adding to the script, the line "Start the Car" which was hilarious! All in all, this had everything! Really a hallmark group of scenes for the show!

Final wrap-up items of note include Snapper Carr giving Kara the accolades she deserves. He does so after she left the room so she may or may not have heard it, but it shows his callousness is with a purpose. He wants her to be defiant and make her own choices. Also we have Agent Schott, defender of the stars! Too funny and great to see that friendship moment between him and James. Their relationship feels right and good. Maggie forgives Alex which we knew had to happen because they are just too good together! And finally, Kara and Mon-El have a nice wrap up moment that is going to lead to Mon-El walking down the hero's path. We really enjoyed this one!

The team matters but something like the Flash will never ever devote lengthy arcs to supporting characters...James conceivably has neither skill like Arrow nor power like Supergirl, and he wears tech made by someone else. His motive is dodgy and sudden at best, and now he acts like a kid playing around. The business of with Wally on The Flash ties in the the main plot and Barry's story every time. The business with James is always a distraction.

If there's a supporting character getting too much focus it's Mon El. All his scenes are to further his development while offering no type of personal development for Kara. Guardian affects Kara in one way or another; it offers "competition" from a vigilante, & conflict because it's a secret her friends & sister are keeping from her.
I've seen many saying the show doesn't need more heroes, it takes away from Kara (besides season 1 established that Alex -who is the co-lead- & J'onn are Kara's backup) but I haven't seen mention of how much time is spent on Mon El. Mon El hasn't done anything helpful (this ep. all he did was complain), & he has to be pushed into being a hero. Yet James who does want to help is hated on. I also dislike James having to get a costume when they can have him be a hero through other means (he's CEO of a media company & a journalist. He could mentor Kara as a journalist.) but he's not the one getting an unnecessary amount of attention from the writers.

If it's to be an ensemble drama shouldn't they change the name of the show to something like The Legion of Superheroes?.

Why? That makes no sense, since only Kara and Mon-El have any solid connections to the Legion in the comics. Also, these characters aren't merely comic books anymore.

That was my interpretation of your comments "Not gonna happen. It's an ensemble drama, not a solo hero show." which I read as you saying you want to see less Supergirl and more of the other characters. But to me this is still Supergirl's story with numerous characters (e.g. Alex and MM) there to support her that can help out when needed.

I apologise if I mis-read your comments and with the benefit of hindsight should've asked what you meant first.

I'm interested to know though who is the main audience for this show if not comic book/superhero fans?.

KUDOS...

To the writers for talking about something not really discussed in the US Media, but should...Human Trafficking, something that is worse than slavery. And they did it in a way that was not too hit you over the head. It's too betwixt and between for stories on trafficking in the US, unlike in other parts of the world.

To Jogunraf, the newest comedy relief on this show. I liked him...MORE I SAY! His line at the end...well cartoonist Chuck Jones I think said leave em laughing at the end...he did and made Supergirl laugh her cutiepie giggle and double face palm.

To Snapper Carr...I overruled your objection to Kara's story pitch, which would be something out of Coast to Coast AM radio. The best reporters come up with stories. And I think we saw the turning point of Kara vs. Snapper, but at the same time we just may as well be seeing Perry White 2.0. And you are easy to buy for...coffee and danish.

And all these little Superman Lives Easter Eggs like START THE CAR and Thanagarian...Would not have worked at first based on ehat I read about the film. But these were the best elements from Smith's script. Also DIBS and CRINKLE! One word can make things go along so nicely...not as powerful as SHAZAM! but...you know.

Well...well.....well. ;-)

I agree. The show's title is Supergirl and I began watching it to see her not any supporting character. I prefer to see them as in fact role players filling am important role on the team but not oddities like the Guardian distraction.

The Flash and Arrow are ensemble dramas as well. Old fans of the comics need to stop being too possessive, and understand that they are NOT the main audience for these shows. Because if they were, then the shows would have surely been canceled half-way through their first seasons, as there simply aren't enough of us around to keep them going. They have to appeal to the broader cultural aspects of real life...and real life usually sets up a lot of messy situations for the protagonist to eventually deal with.

Also Kara should ALWAYS be center stage.

Not gonna happen. It's an ensemble drama, not a solo hero show. "Stronger Together" isn't just an old saying on Krypton. :)

If it's to be an ensemble drama shouldn't they change the name of the show to something like The Legion of Superheroes?. The show is still called Supergirl and she is the sole reason I watch as she's an awesome character and fantasy that I've enjoyed for 25+ years. So I hope the stories continue to center around her.

I understand the need for the other characters and enjoy them but certainly don't want them to take away from my beloved Supergirl, she is what I'd call my happy place when watching the show.

Just my opinion anyway.

The only complaint i have is Guardian it does not work. Jimmy should go get a storyline without that stuff. Make him a part of the team without him being a vigilante.

Disagree with this. The Guardian bits are setting up a rivalry, which has actually been building up since the first episode of the season. Remember when Kara was ribbing her cousin when she got the headlines? Or when Mon-El chided her after Kara caught him working for a loan shark? Next week's episode should be rather interesting, since Kara's nemesis Livewire escaping again seems to have unnerved her.

This ep was pretty cool and i loved that they showed Supergirl as a real hero she was ready to stand up to evil while having no power. Mon -El continues to be the best addition to this show and i am glad he is is a regular. The chemistry between Kara and Mon is simply fantastic. The only complaint i have is Guardian it does not work. Jimmy should go get a storyline without that stuff. Make him a part of the team without him being a vigilante. Also Kara should ALWAYS be center stage. ALWAYS! its her story. And they should include Martian Manhunter more as well.

Yes Kara should always be center stage. She is the attraction.

I too liked Supergirl's bravery in a red sun world but was she completely without power? Remember Krypton was a bigger planet than Earth with heavier gravity and coming to lighter gravity Earth contributes to Supergirl's strength. In this episode she was a very good fighter despite being under a red sun but if this planet had lighter gravity than Krypton she would still be stronger than its natives.
