In this corner, weighing in at 130 pounds five foot eight inches tall, she is described as the Titan from the East, The Crusher from Kasnia it's ... RED DAUGTHER! In the other corner, also weighing in at 130 pounds five foot eight inches tall, the very embodiment of hope, help and compassion, she is described as the Maiden of Might, the Girl of Steel, The Last Daughter of Krypton, it's ... SUPERGIRL! Ok ok, that's enough of my imaginary boxing illusion, but it was very much a battle of two equally matched Kryptonians! There was a lot that excited and surprised us! Here's what stood out to us:
- Young Kara and Alex: Young Kara and Alex make their return! Just as we predicted! So exciting! This time the two were walking and dancing to a song and Kara was pleading for Alex not to go to college because she would miss her. Alex assured her that she would be fine, she just needed to make new friends. One of them slips but Alex's mind can't remember what happened. Current day Alex wakes up and realizes again there is something wrong with her memory.
- Kara and Red Daughter: Kara clearly doesn't give the White House guards time to interview her. She breaks free after claiming to see a spider. Just then Red Daugther walks in and Kryptonites Kara into a trap. Both of them are de-powered in a room where Red Daughter is tasked with killing Kara. She says that Kara is the enemy and protects the corrupt. Kara, with Kryptonite literally sitting on her wrists, notes that Red Daughter doesn't know her at all. She also says that she's been dealing with the pain of Kryptonite for 15 years! She summons her strength and breaks free! She then jumps out the window where her powers return full just in time to fly away.
- Kara and J'onn: Having been shot during Kryptonite poisoning, there is a bullet stuck in Kara's arm. She heads to J'onn to get help with the bullet and to see if Alex's memories can be restored. J'onn fixes up Kara but isn't so sure about Alex's memories. J'onn has blocked off synapses that Alex's brain has compensated for. If she doesn't figure it out herself, she could go insane when the two realities crash together. Kara rushes off to help Alex but doesn't tell her.
- Lena Focuses Her Mother: Lena needs her mom to figure out how to extract the Harun-El from James and anyone else that was infected. She injects her mother with a neurotoxin and doesn't tell her which one. She gives her 24 hours to solve the Harun-El issue while Lena and James go and hunt down Lex. Lena also used a baby truth teller to get the truth from her mother where she actually confesses that she loves Lena.
- J'onn, Dreamer and Brainy Go Alien Finding: The trio need to find where the Children of Liberty are taking the aliens they have captured. Dreamer has a vision that informs her where they might be and she locks on to a younger alien that might be a big key. The three head to an Ameritech location where they discover the aliens being moved. Brainy is preoccupied with wanting to tell Dreamer he loves her and agrees to a plan that gets Dreamer and Brainy caught rather quickly by the Children of Liberty. J'onn, flying a safe distance away, see the two get captured. Brainy is tortured and it is revealed his species has ancestral memory. He can remember all the things Brianiac, Indigo and the other did. Because of that he is basically rebooted and uses Brainiac's darkness to easily defeat his captures. The now evilish Brainy decides to use both Dreamer and J'onn to get the planet location where the aliens are being sent.
- Lockwood Realizes He Is the Pawn: Ben heads to a secret safe house where he confronts Otis. Ben Lockwood discovers that he has basically lost everything to advance Lex's plans. Otis, not knowing that Ben has powers now attacks and tries to kill Ben. Ben gets the upper hand and pulls out Otis' Kryptonite power source. James and Lena are there long enough to learn of Lex's Kasnian invasion plan but James' body fails him when he tries to get involved.
- Eliza Danvers: Supergirl is able to find Red Daughter's place. It's in direct line of sight with Kara's apartment. Alex arrives to lend help even though Supergirl told her not to come. Just as Alex starts to put two and two together she gets a phone call from her mom Eliza. Eliza lets her know that Kara just arrived which is actually Red Daughter! Supergirl tells Alex to get Eliza out and she flies off for Midvale! Supergirl arrives and Eliza is held hostage. Red Daughter throws Eliza at her and suits up in her all new Black Red Daughter suit complete with new Black helmet that has a lot of the features that Kara's Kryptonite safe suit has. The two battle outside in Midvale but Kara gets the upper hand pretty fast! She kicks the crap out of Red Daughter but then Red Daughter reveals she has a different power that Kara doesn't. This turns the tide. Alex, who is rushing to the battle starts seeing scenes where Kara and her used to do things at. She is starting to remember Kara is Supergirl! We get to see some very cute scenes with the Young versions of Kara and Alex. Kara clearly saves Alex from the fall mentioned earlier. Kara blows snow during Christmas and so on. Back to the fight however, Red Daughter beats Kara essentially to death. Alex is there to see Kara and remembers that Kara has said time and again, there is sunlight in everything. Alex begs Kara to pull sunlight from the grass, the trees the Earth. She does and is able to survive.
Final wrap up moments. With Kara out of the fight, Kasnia invades. Lex is there using a new compressed version of the satellite weapon in his Lex Suit. He stops the invasion and the President gets on TV and thanks him for his efforts. The President also notes that the Kasnian invasion was planned by Supergirl who is now dead. Lex is shown holding the body of Red Daughter supposedly dead in his arms. We aren't quite sure if she is dead or not though.

Me, too!
I really liked Jesse's portrayal of Braniac 5 as the "benevolent alien" that he always was in the Legion of Superheroes in the old Action Comics. He was kind of like DC Comics' version of Star Trek's Mr. Spock. Who knows - maybe Brainiac 5 was part of the inspiration for the character of Mr. Spock!

the full-lit version of Red Daughter dropping to the groung to avoid getting slugged by a flying Supergirl. This is the stunt record, so you can see all the wires holding the two actresses in place. The combat is in profile to mask the detail that Ms Benoiste is actually 'flying behind Ms. Clarke, relative to the camera axis. In that scene, the stunt woman is doing the skid to land almost on her back, and the actress herself must be doing her own stunt of flying over head., showinga truly impressive set of back muscles. She is flat as a board.
In Supergirl doing the somersault attack on Red Daughter, that must be Super Stunt Girl doing the somersault.
The instagram also has a slow-motion of Jennifer Clarke flying through a wall and landing.
And yes I can’t believe I cried over Alex literally holding grass - when they did I missed you so much scene the whole Supergirl fandom cried us too
Wasn’t that tweet just about the episodes where they were about to air? I’m pretty sure that Lex is going to be killed in the finale.
I have 2 complaints about the fight scene. First, when Red Daughter reveals that she has evolved, and you see her hand glowing with power from the Harnenl (not sure how to spell), why is Supergirl just going to stand there like, wow that is scary, why don't I just let you hit me as hard as you can with it why I stand here and do nothing to defend myself. Then, why change it to a night scene? It just makes it harder to see, and seemed really unnecessary. We get it, this gives her greater power than Supergirl.
On a positive, the scene where Alex gets her memory back and rushes to Supergirl's aid was very well done. In my opinion, one of the best scenes of the series.
I love the show, full of very talented people. I think the writers need to step up their game.
Quoting Brierrose:
it's because Red Daughter managed to knock the living daylights out of Supergirl
It seemed an odd cut. Absent any in-universe explanation, I'm inclined to accept this as the intent.
Quote: Agreed! The effect was simple but gorgeous, and Blake Neely outdid himself throughout--and this scene in particular.
Yes, I agree. "El Mayarah" is fine with me, but I also feel that the Supergirl Team should be smaller, like it was in seasons 1 and 2. (And not every Team member needs to be in every episode.)
"I'd also be delighted to see or hear Cat. It'd be enough for me if Calista stayed in LA and just phoned in her part. It's not unprecedented in TV for a characterto be only a voice on the phone."
Or to bring it a little more up to date, they could have Cat on a Skype connection, so we can get a visual of her, too! I've already done that in my own fan fiction stories, if a Team member is out of town and can't attend a meeting in person.
