Reality Bytes Recap

It's an uncertain time right now. We want to wish everyone a safe and healthy night. We know that with production being paused, these are some even more precious episodes of Supergirl to watch. Tonight's episode was Nia-focused (in part due to Melissa's directing debut which happens in "Deus Lex Machina"). Nonetheless, there were some heavy topics covered and to many fans' delight we got the return of Nia's roommate! Here's what stood out to us:

  1. Dominator Defeated: Supergirl and Dreamer are working together to take down a rogue Dominator. Supergirl quickly kicks it's butt but it's Dreamer who lands the final blow and knocks him out. The DEO arrives to take the Dominator away where Dreamer and Brainy share an awkward moment. We then cut to a very sweet moment with the sisters. Kara needs help picking an outfit for her date with William. Alex tells her blue, always BLUE! Alex is also training. She is learning to use her new weapon which is a little more complicated than she thought.
  2. Nightclub Attack: Nia's roommate is dating a new man and she wants Nia to meet him. Her roommate is a big Dreamer fan and she pretends to know her personally (ironically not really knowing that Nia is Dreamer). The boyfriend turns out to be catfishing her because she is trans and he wants Dreamer to stop being a superhero because he doesn't agree with her sexuality. He is targeting people in Nia's community until Dreamer stops being a superhero. Kara goes to Nia and offers her help but Dreamer is ready to take him down. Nia gives the cops and Supergirl a few hours before she will deal with this person her way.
  3. A Friend Named Al: J'onn and Alex know a man named Al who has a brother who is missing. He thinks that he might be in something called virtual Las Vegas. The assumption is that the brother paid for a hotel room with cash and being in the VR world, the police have no need to look for him. Alex goes to Kelly to get into the virtual Las Vegas and J'onn heads to Al's house to see what clues they might find to help find Trevor. Back in virtual Las Vegas, we find Alex who has gone into a customized room. This place allows the system to tap into your personal fears. The glitch that Kelly found with the eject button is being exploited by someone. People are being trapped into a simulation. J'onn hunts down a Richard in Opal City. Richard's wife has been having a virtual affair with Trevor. It is believed that Richard is now torturing Trevor. Alex finds Trevor who is blowing up consistently and feeling it. Alex is able to help talk Trevor down and own the rules of his virtual reality. J'onn finds Richard in real life and takes him out.
  4. Dreamer Attacks: Dreamer is able to bait the attacker successfully into a date. The attacker shows up thinking he'll meet Nia and instead finds Dreamer. She is able to make quick work of him and defeats him. Holding him at bay, Dreamer thinks about killing him and just then Supergirl arrives. She is able to talk Nia out of it and pledges more support from the Superfriends to keep an eye out for that kind of hate. We catch up with Nia at Catco who is having serious concerns over her want to kill someone. Some part of her still wants to. Nia is also coming to terms with her break-up with Brainy. All of this is just too much and Kara is able to be there for Nia when she needed her the most.

In the final wrap up moments. we cut to Alex and Kelly at the bar. They talk about how this new tech is so groundbreaking that there aren't enough regulations to keep it safe. Trevor comes to the bar to thank Alex and Kelly for their help. Nia and her roommate share a moment and support each other. Nia tells her that she needs to keep going and keep putting herself out there. Brainy heads to National City Police and hand delivers mountains of evidence against the hate groups. Alex gets a call from her mom. Jeremiah has been found and he's dead. In the last scene of the episode, we see how Leviathan is capturing the people who can't use the end simulation button and storing them in a warehouse.

Oh those subtle plot points... I was just reading that guest star Ana Van Hooft, who played the wife Jennifer in the Alex VR portion, played Jenn in Season 1 of Arrow (1x18). I wonder if the writers intentionally named her character Jenn-ifer for this reason to give fans a hidden Easter egg. I am amazed that people can spot these instances. Clever!

Describe the recent seasons in one sentence.

"Supergirl quickly kicks it's butt but it's Dreamer who lands the final blow and knocks him out."

I agree that this was a stronger episode than The Bodyguard. I actually enjoyed this episode quite a lot more than I anticipated. Wasn't really a "Supergirl" episode, but both the Nia and Alex stories had some excellent drama.

The next two episodes will also be light on Melissa due to her directing duties. And the season itself may be cut down to even less than 20 episodes, due to the production shutdown from COVID 19. So it'll be really interesting to see what the rest of the season entails, if they are able to give it an appropriate "conclusion", how much Melissa we have, and if we are even able to get 20 episodes.

It was fitting they had Al back as he was also in American Dreamer, if I recall correctly. Did dopplerganger Al die, like Beth on Batwoman, or did they return him to the other [Brainiac-shrunken] Earth with the Kryptonian witches?

So far Reality Bytes is getting a much better rating than The Bodyguard.

For the problems I had with it, it seemed like everyone involved with "Reality Bytes" at least gave a darn. I didn't get that feeling about "The Bodyguard "at all.

The Bodyguard was my least favorite of S5. I think it helped that Reality Bytes has two distinct/dueling stories. If you didnt like one, you may have liked the other.

I just saw this message on Instagram from David Harewood. "Crazy times. Hope everyone's ok, I'm sure we're all feeling it a little. Really looking forward to getting home, such a strange end to the season seems like a lifetime away already. Heading to the Caribbean for a few days for a documentary shoot then back to London. Can't wait to see family. ❤️"

I'm wondering if most of the shooting for season 5 was done before the shut down or if we will only get what is done and wait for season 6. This would be totally understandable because of what's going on in the world right now but I was just curious if anyone heard anything.

It's my understanding that episodes 19 and 20 are at risk of completion. With all of your travelling I'm sure you are aware of the Airports being a very hot spot for the spread of this virus. God Bless and keep you always.

It seems episode 18 is now the finale

I took my discussion about this in the thread about the production of the show being suspended due to the virus. There was new information this morning on Tvline regarding the episodes. :-)

Jessie Smollet called to say he loved this episode.

Second lowest viewership of the season and among the lowest of the whole series. But hey, writers won’t get the message.

Your comment is extremely rude, and really unnecessary.

The last 3 episodes have been up in viewership shows what you know hey get the message

I liked Dreamer in this episode. It was inetersting seeing another side of her that we haven't seen before. I really like her friend too. She seems really awesome to be around. It really sucke what she went through but we probably don't even know the half of what they have to go through in real life. I don't know why people can't just accept people for who they are

As for kara/William. I think they would be much better suited as friends. Hopefully the writers realise this too but I highly doubt it. any love interest interactions always look weird and awkward. IMO it just doesn't work at all.

They need to get Alex back to the DEO where she belongs. So jeremiah is dead. I forgot all about him
