Supergirl returns in an all new episode tonight and we mean returns! The schedule difficulties from the start of the season are behind us now and Melissa's availability should be back to normal this episode! Last week, we saw agent Jensen make a sacrifice to become a "Parasite". Agent Liberty stood resolute in his cause that humans stand up to aliens and that with the Graves siblings gone, it doesn't matter who would continue the cause as long as someone did. Kara is breathing a sigh of relief as the Kryptonite in the air has been removed. The stage was set for another showdown but with a new Parasite! Here's what stood out to us:
- Rooftop Garden: It was a fun thing to see the gang all hanging out in a new area! It looks like Kara took time to set up the roof of her apartment with a garden. Nia, James, Lena, Brainy, Alex, Kara, and J'onn all attend to share a moment together. Brainy is a bit "in the bag" but I guess one of his super powers is to recover from alcohol quickly. He and Nia share a cute moment and James praises Kara on getting an interview with Amadei who is an alien healer and hasn't given an interview in two decades.
- Supergirl Meets the New Parasite: In the sneak peek we saw from tonight's episode, we knew Kara would need to intervene when agent Jensen arrived at the park where an alien was performing a shape-shifting street act. Kara arrives and steps in to stop him, only to discover that he has the powers of Parasite! Parasite who now has some of Kara's powers, is held back by Kara who is able to keep him at a distance. When Alex and the DEO arrive, he is able to tag the shape-shifter alien and escape in a new shape. Kara knows that Alex will sideline her because they can't risk someone getting the powers of Supergirl, but she knows that she can fight back with her press badge too.
- J'onn Continues the Alien Support Group: At the alien bar, J'onn continues the support group. Shortly after an alien shares a positive story about not using an image-inducer, Amadei's right hand arrives to tell J'onn that he has been attacked. The article that Kara wrote about him thrust him into the limelight and he had his life-saving amulet stolen. J'onn reads Amadei's mind and finds the woman they suspect who stole the amulet. J'onn shapeshifts into the woman and gets Brainy to run a facial recognition on her. Turns out that she is actually Amadei's daughter.
- James Olsen is Recognized by the City: During a media and press event to honor James for his work, Ben Lockwood approaches James. He views James' work as Guardian as a symbol of human hope. He wants to turn Guardian into another Agent of Liberty. James says, "Let me be very clear, you will not lay this at my feet", which dismisses Ben and lets him know that he can't use Guardian for the Children of Liberty movement.
- Amadei's Amulet and Parasite: The Children of Liberty reached out asking for someone to help them get Amadei's amulet. It turns out that Amadei's ex-lover was still holding a grudge and took the amulet from him and gave it to the Children of Liberty. Ben Lockwood was able to surmise that if Parasite wore the amulet, he could stay healthy and keep the powers he absorbed from the aliens he touched. J'onn and Kara head to the vigil that has appeared outside of Amadei's home because that will likely be the largest concentration of aliens in the city. Parasite, who can hold the powers he absorbs, would be invincible.
- Parasite Battle: During the remaining moments of the lunch-in with James, the mayor arrives to let them know that there is an attack in mid-town. Lockwood uses the attack to force James into action as Guardian. Alex has the ability to bring down Parasite, but it is imperative that Supergirl not fight. Supergirl starts saving everyone one at a time with super speed but she can't get them all out. Alex takes a play out of Supergirl's book and appeals to Jensen's humanity and asks him to stand down. Jensen stands down but references the fact that "He" (referring to Agent Liberty) is still out there but the DEO isn't aware of him yet. Even though Alex was successful, she does disobey a direct order from Col. Haley to shoot on Jensen.
Final wrap up moments. Amadei gets his amulet back and is met with his daughter. The two reconnect. Col. Haley addresses the direct orders but gives Alex a pass. She shows however, that she has a bias against J'onn. Alex stands up for him to Haley. Haley responds by demanding all protocols be observed and wants a salute before Alex is dismissed. J'onn heads to the alien bar where the bartender praises him for his detective work. J'onn is given a new case as he is "the one aliens can go to when they can't go to the police". James and Lena stand on the balcony and discuss Guardian. He thinks he might be able to use Guardian to find out who the leader is of the Children of Liberty. Kara and Nia talk about how Kara wants to do a weekly profile on the aliens of National City. Nia hears her pitch and is on board. James calls Ben and offers an olive branch.

I agree it's time to return to basics. Keep the focus on Kara/Supergirl with an action/adventure format and presenting Supergirl as a nonpartisan hero. Any messages should be subtle such as an occasional thank you by the authorities to Supergirl for her services to her adopted planet. That'd be a way of sending the message "immigrants do not threaten but strengthen America" with a light touch. Keep in mind this line from Shakespeare, "Brevity is the soul of wit".
While I appreciate the writers wanting to deal with current events, I think they are going overboard and need to go back to basics. This story is about Supergirl/Kara and her sister, Alex. I hope they can continue on point without overwhelming us with too many plots and characters.
One area I think has great possibilities is J’onn J’ones’ taking on a “Sam Spade” role. This could be a very positive addition to the series.
Again, let’s return to basics. We all need some escapism in times like these.
Monday wasn't that easy. Supergirl had to contend with established programs like Monday Night Football and Dancing with the Stars. Any night has its difficulties. My concern is not the competition but that Supergirl's writing and management. I'd like to see more Supergirl heroics, no Guardian and less of the lesser characters like their love lives. Call me one-dimensional but my interest is Kara/Supergirl and not other characters personal lives. I prefer the approach taken with Snapper Carr. All we heard about his personal life was his good line, "The only person I ever thanked was my divorce lawyer."
The opening was fun. Brainy was a hoot drunk.
Cool that they did not kill Parasite off. He is always welcome again.
Bob here is truly misinformed. The show is now on the toughest Night of the week. Yeah i hate CW for putting it there. But its Holding its own against all the crazy competition. Supergirl will have 7-8 seasons for sure. Its leading their sunday Night. Where any of their other shows would pretty much tank too if they moved there. Their other shows get 0.4-0.3 on the weak weekdays. SG get the same on the most crazy Night full of NFL overrun and SNF and all other events.
Of course it would have done better on the easier monday. But it is what it is.
That would be truly disappointing if it were just to wrap it up. I would like to at least see season 5 so we can get to 100 episodes. The first female lead superhero show to hit that is kind of a big deal. But again, that's pending the correction in writing I was speaking about earlier, with better content for Kara/Supergirl.
I've had this feeling for a while now. It's like they need to make a season 4 in order to syndicate the show and continue to profit from it, but they aren't planning to make more after this. They are saving money by shooting less Supergirl action sequences, and since they don't care about ratings now they can make the season a passion project about social justice issues. To be honest, the whole thing is starting to look like a job for the actors rather than a project they are passionate about. I hate to see the show end on a whimper. Hopefully they will shoot two or three action oriented episodes this season.
I agree with this whole heartedly. It is not like this is just a problem this season - this has been a continuing problem. The constant introduction of new characters has taken away from the time spent on SuperGirl. We had other characters in season one but you always, always, knew that the show was based on SuperGirl both as Kara the reporter and as SuperGirl. That has not happened since season one and it needs to change. We all know that Melissa was doing the broadway show - but the Guardian and love scenes between James and Lena and the DEO scenes with Chyler and her new superior and J'onn's scenes of becoming a detective for aliens are not so involved that they cannot now be curtailed with Melissa being back.
I love the topic of the show this season and I love the direction the show is taking on this topic this season but not if the writers keep diminishing the role of Melissa.
As long as Melissa is in the show I am here to watch - and I want this show to be on for many more seasons to come. However, in order for that to happen the show has to go back to being focused on the character that it is based on. Season one had an even split between Kara the reporter and Kara as SuperGirl. It also had subplots but not so many that it took away from the main character therefore - it can be done, it has been done and it needs to be done.
I myself will not say anything further on this since it seems more of a forum topic since it has become so involved and I want to make sure I stay within the rules of this website.
I'm not asking them to drop stories. I'm asking them to give Melissa's character something equally or more compelling as the other cast members. Alex, J'onn, James, and perhaps even Brainy have more compelling stories and conflicts, as well as better scenes, than Melissa, this year. That's a problem. That's a BIG problem.
I'm giving them some benefit of the doubt and giving it until mid-season to remedy that, as they may still be working through the scripts they wrote, specifically keeping Melissa's role light, because they may not have known she'd just be missing 2 episodes in production. But if the trend continues, as is, then this isn't Supergirl's show. As great as Chyler, David, and Mehcad may be, I'm here to watch Supergirl...not the Alex Danvers show, guest starring Supergirl, which is what it's felt like this year.
And if that's still the dynamic, mid season...then I'll likely stop watching. Not to make a statement, or to "rage quit", or to protest. But simply because the show isn't appealing to me when it's not about Supergirl.
