Much like a game of chess, all the pieces seemed to move into place to bring this episode of Supergirl! First the charming and delightful Peter Gadiot was cast as a new interpretation of Mr. Mxyzptlk, the 5th dimensional imp with powers beyond the wildest imagination. Second, incredibly talented and fan heralded author, Sterling Gates was tapped to co-write this episode with new Co-Executive Producer Jessica Queller, to bring an authenticity to the comic developed character that would delight fans. And finally, love was in the air as the recent Valentines Day afforded show runners an opportunity to explore a very new aspect of the holiday for both Alex and Maggie. It's a special kind of feeling when all this comes together at once and it makes for memorable TV! Here's what stood out to us:
- Mr. Mxyzptlk's Entrance: On the heels of last week's episode, this one picked up right where it left off. Mxy's brash, speedy determination to win Kara right then and there was hilarious as he demonstrated his power with a snap of his fingers, whisking Mon-El away to the DEO. Kara's wedding dress was stunning as we saw in the photos from last week. Just starting the episode off like this gave it such strong energy and excitement.
- Couples Doing Well: Kara and Mon-El's relationship might have hit a Mxy sized bump but it was clear at the DEO that Kara wanted to get back to where they were at her apartment! On top of that, J'onn sends a message to M'Gann, Maggie and Alex start the day off in Alex's apartment and Winn meets Lyra! Everyone was doing well!
- Parasite Returns: Bringing back the Parasite was expected from what we knew, but his power levels seemed off the charts! It was a really awesome fight scene! The backhand he laid on Kara was so well done, we felt it just watching! Then suddenly, we hear Superman's theme (from the Supergirl show) and we were on the edge of our seats hoping for Tyler Hoechlin's return, but alas, Mxy even pulled one over on us with his big M suit! Interesting note, that is the first live action non-S suit ever on TV!
- Maggie and Alex Valentines Day V1: Maggie didn't have a supportive coming out and it was a heartbreaking story. Maggie went out on a a limb and put a card in her crush's locker. Then her crush sent it to her parents and thus to Maggie's parents, and she had to live at her aunt's place for three years! Alex's attempts to make it a special day though for Maggie was very sweet.
- Fortress of Solitude Fight: Mxy brings a super large version of Jor-El to life to teach Kara a lesson about lying!? We were wowed by seeing this! The creativity to see that on TV today is astounding! On top of this, Kara never planned on marrying Mxy, but she did see an opportunity to put Mon-El in his place with it! Certainly, it forced Mon-El to be honest about his jealousy!
- Cancellation Code: Well it might have been in a "moon language" but Kara was able to trick Mxy into writing his name backward and as some cultures say, to write something is a way to truly say something! Loved that call-back to J'onn's message to M'Gann! Many of the episodes from season 1 had those call-backs and themes and this episode definitely had that feel!
- Winn and Lyra: Lyra's courage to meet Winn at a restaurant primarily for humans was inspiring! While aliens and human relationships are new, they don't need to be discouraged and Winn was standing up for that. We know that Lyra's part was short but we think that we are shipping Winn and Lyra already!
- Belated Prom: Kara challenged Maggie to bend for her sister's sake and the DEO and Maggie did just that. One of the best lines of the night (that didn't go to Mxy) was "You're the kind of woman I could like Valentines day for" which Maggie said to Alex. Their prom scene was a wonderful way to share a growing moment for their new relationship and both played the parts stunningly!
- Kara Tricks Mxy and Mon-El: We had a feeling that Kara was pulling the wool over Mon-El's eyes and it was for a good reason! She was able to get him to back down and let Kara deal with the situation. On top of that though, Kara was doing it to protect Mon-El. These two have some big feelings for each other and when you are super-powered like they are, protection could be their down fall. However, tonight they both let their guards down and shared an incredible kiss! Such a great way to cap off a wonderful Valentines day!
Well that was one for the record books! Send @sterlinggates and @jessicaqueller congratulations on an incredible episode! While we are still shaky on how to say his name, we certainly learned how to type it well!

That's the network's fault, not the people who make the show. CW had originally scheduled Supergirl/Flash/Arrow/Legends to return from winter break during the week of January 16, and this episode was filmed with that original schedule in mind. If the network had stuck with that schedule, this episode would have aired on February 13. But, for reasons known only to the executives at The CW, they pushed back the returns by a week, from January 16 to January 23, so the Valentine's Day episode ended up airing after the holiday. A few days late is certainly better than airing the episodes out of order, like CBS did.
Here's what it reminded me of (a classic movie moment! ):

Me, too!
What a great adaptation of a classic Silver Age Supergirl story! Like the writer at IGN said, this was the show at its light-hearted best
(And I still remember reading the original "Bride of Mr. Mxyzptlk" story in Action Comics 291, when I was ten years old.)
Melissa Benoist and Sterling Gates totally get Supergirl, really understand the character!
And so does Bengal (the artist who only uses one name professionally).
Here's what Bengal had to say about Kara Zor-El recently:
"I always LOVE drawing Supergirl. There's some happiness in her that I really like."
And here's a sample of Bengal's recent work:

There is a group of people on twitter that feel exactly the same way you do...totally. :)
And what a 5 minutes of screen time it was....I loved it.
42 minutes to be exact.
Sanvers had a total of 5 minutes screen time. This was 40-45 minute episode.
Because Kara is spending all her time and energy on a selfish man child instead of being an empowered heroine like she was in s1.
I agree w/ all except about most people loving Karamel. On this site he's a favorite but on every other site I visit (Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit) there's much more dislike for him & the ship than love.
I've lost patience w/ this season, 80% of it has been romance drama while the main relationships have been sidelined. If Kara & Alex stand near each other in a scene apparently it's too much for the writers. James, J'onn who? Why search for Jeremiah when there's Mon El & Sanvers.
