Melissa Opens Up on Supergirl

Well it took a trip to the Spirit Awards to get Melissa to open up about her new role as Supergirl (we've sent several interview requests and never heard back), but finally caught up with her on Supergirl. Great news though, she sounds amped and excited about the role:

Melissa Benoist reveals that she's eager to take flight as TV's Supergirl, but admits the thought of potentially donning Kara Zor-El's iconic – and somewhat impractical – comic book costume "a little daunting."

During a quick chat at Film Independent's Spirit Awards ceremony over the weekend, the actress – recently cast as the Maid of Steel in the "Supergirl" pilot crafted for CBS by producers Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "Flash") and Ali Adler ("Glee," "The New Normal") – told CBR News she's particularly looking forward to playing the superheroine's down-to-earth side.

"What's so wonderful about her is that she is such a relatable character, amongst her powers," said Benoist. "What I'm the most excited about is telling a story about a human being really realizing their potential and their strength, and I think that's something that everyone will root for and want in their own lives – I'm really excited about that."

While Benoist would not reveal if she would be wearing any version of the traditional Supergirl costume in the series – or a superhero costume at all – she did reveal that she's taken a good look at the comic book suit, including its often micro-mini hemline.

"It's a little daunting," she laughed. "It's daunting, but that's good. I like being pushed. I work well under pressure."

Prior to her casting coup as Kara, Benoist had been enjoying an increasingly high profile in Hollywood, beginning with her role as Marley Rose in the fourth and fifth seasons of "Glee" and her recent turn in the Oscar-nominated film "Whiplash" opposite Miles Teller.

"I think if you told my five-year-old self that all this would be happening in this period of time, I would not have believed you!" she said. "Because it's been really wonderful. I feel so privileged to be working and doing what I've always loved to do since I was four years old…I'm a little overwhelmed by it, to be honest.

We are loving Melissa more and more. She is going to be a great Supergirl! What do you think about her interview? Are you excited about her as Supergirl? Comments below
