Supergirl Series Finale Recap

One thousand, six hundred and twenty one articles. This is how many news articles I've written about the Girl of Steel. There, of course, are also interviews, spoilers, media, so much more that the team here has written but for us, this has been a seven-year long journey. I started covering the show before it launched in 2015 so I've been with Supergirl and her journey for a long time. I've made the conscious choice to keep my personal feelings about the show out of our news coverage and I think that has worked well and allowed your voices to lead the conversation. Several of you have reached out to me personally wondering what will happen next for Supergirl.tv, we'll be around. After the series is over, we will be sharing some of our personal stories that this journey has provided us. We plan to pull back the curtain and show you ALL the stuff we went through with this show. Some of it not so fun, and some of it, absolutely magical.

Of course we would love to have you all join our other sites like, Batwoman.tv, Stargirl.tv, DCTV.news, TheWitcher.tv, YoungJustice.tv, and of course, SupermanAndLoistv.com. We will also keep the lights on here as well and bring Supergirl related news should it develop. For now, let's focus on Kara's last journey and share with you all the things that stood out to us this episode:

  1. Ransom: Lex recorded a message that sets the stage for Nyxly to get the All Stone. They need to bring all the totems they have plus the final destiny totem to a neutral location where magic and powers don't work. Alex and Kelly are willing to give Nyxly anything to get Esme back but Kara is trying to keep a level head about it. Meanwhile, Nyxly tries to do the Love totem gaunlet but it doesn't work for some reason. Lex offers to get it himself but she forces Lex to agree to never hurt Esme.
  2. Mother Luthor: Lillian arrives at Lex's hideout. Lex has publicly been accused of murder and he's never been so brash. Lillian is there to call out Lex and see why there is this new behavior. She discovers that Lex is in love with Nyxly and she demands Lex drop her. Lex chooses Nyxly. Nyxly tries again for the love totem but fails and Alex and Kelly share their helplessness feelings at the tower. Dreamer and Brainy go together into the dream realm to find the totem. They get the location, learn Esme is ok but couldn't find Lex. Kara is quickly able to get the totem but in doing so sees a future where Lex and Nyxly win. Once she has the totem, Alex arrives and takes the totem.
  3. Alex vs Kara: Alex will do anything for Esme and get her back. Kara is still thinking about the greater good but eventually Kara lets Alex go with the totem to pay the ransom. Lillian, without having the success she wanted from Lex plants doubt in Nyxly about Lex. Team Supergirl, without Alex and Kelly, formulate another plan. There is a satellite that can shoot direct sun energy right into Kara. That amount of new energy will give Kara god-like reflexes and she could take on Lex and Nyxly even without the All Stone but the Sun will be dim for four months causing severe problems on Earth. Kara thinks the ends justify the means and begins to power up.
  4. Betrayal: Nyxly catches Lex trying to get the love totem. He is almost successful but Nyxly stops him and the totem appears. This is the last straw for Nyxly and she ends her relatonship with Lex. Nyxly heads to the bridge. There, Alex, Kelly, Dreamer, and Lena wait. The exchange goes well and Esme is saved. Nyxly powers up and creates the All Stone. Lex and his mother arrive and he blows up the bridge which tumbles everyone to the river below. Kara continues to power up but seeing how she is scaring people, she decides to abandon her plan.
  5. All out for the All Stone: All the players at the bridge make a plan for the All Stone. It is tossed around like a hot potato. Supergirl and Brainy arrive to help. Esme gets a hold of the All Stone and smashes it. It is broken into three pieces. Lex gets a piece, Kara gets a piece and Lex gets one. Lex and Nyxly begin to fight using their shards.  Lena uses magic to break up the fight but Nyxly sees an open shot. Lillian takes the hit for Lex and saves him. Lex then goes after Nyxly for this betrayal. Lillian is moved to the Tower med bay and the more Nyxly and Lex fight the more they drain humanity of what makes them human. Humans start to drain and turn black and white. Kara is unsure what to do and goes out into the city to find how humanity can pull back from the energy that is stolen from them.

Kara, final episode begins:

  1. Black and White: Humanity continues to wane. Lillian tells Lena that she knew that Lena was a witch and placed magical blockers around to supress her powers and forced her into science. Lillian dies trying to free Lena from her Luthorism. Kara returns to the tower with the idea that it isn't Supergirl's job to save everyone but to, instead, show people how they can save themselves. If people call back their own humanity, it will depower Nyxly and Lex. Brainy with the help of Lena's magic sends a message to all of humanity at once. She is able to empower everyone with her words. Now depowered, Lex and Nyxly call in reinforcements. A gauntlet of old foes appear to fight. Red Tornado, Parasite, Metallo, even a dragon.
  2. Legion of Superheroes: Team Supergirl engages all the new enemies. It turns out that Supergirl's speech was so life changing, the effect was felt in the future and The Legion arrives to help. Mon-El arrives to stop Lex, and Winn, piloting a legion ship, zaps the dragon. Even James has returned to help out. Even when Lex gets the drop on Lena, Andrea arrives out of the darkness to save her! Alex's mom also shows up to stop Nyxly. Supergirl, Mon-El, J'onn, Toyman, Dreamer, Guardian 1, Guardian 2, Andrea, Lena and Alex arrive to stop the pair. Lex opens a portal to the Phantom Zone! This backfires and the Phantoms only target Lex and Nyxly. Hubris is the ultimate mask of fear and with humanity powered up, only Lex and Nyxly are taken back to the Phantom Zone!
  3. William's Funeral: Everyone attends Willaims funeral, even the Legion. The President has called J'onn to form a new DEO that J'onn and team will re-imagine as they see fit. The Legion heads back to the future but Winn will return for Kelly and Alex's wedding. Brainy is prepared to return to the future with Mon-El as well.

In the finale wrap up moments, which actually last about 2/3s of the episode, Kara sees that her inspiration has taken hold and even a cat stuck in a tree no longer requires her intervention. Cat Grant calls to let Kara know she has bought Catco back from Andrea. She want's Kara to be the Editor-in-Chief of the paper. They will only report on the things that need to be reported. Not fluff like Andrea did. Kara shares the news and her crossroads with Alex on a final couch scene.

The Wedding of Danvers and Olsen:

  1. Before the Wedding: J'onn performs decorations in the sky, Alex reveals herself to her mom and Kara and Esme arrive for hugs! James gets to see Kelly and he shares how proud he is of Kelly.
  2. Brainy Returns: Brainy throws caution to the wind and returns to our time to be with Nia. No longer wanting to be a hero in the 31st century, Brainy is here to stay. Winn and Kara sing the wedding procession song. A perfect time for Melissa and Jeremy to show off their pipes. J'onn performs the wedding and Kelly and Alex's bond is made official.
  3. The Originals: We next get a few scenes from the originals. Winn and J'onn share a moment where we find out that J'onn and M'Gann will have a son! James takes a present from Esme and gives her a camera to pass on the tradition. James, Winn and Kara reminisce about season one. The secret office they hid in from Cat Grant.
  4. Ms. Grant: Kara gets a call from Cat at the wedding. She reveals that she knows "Kira" is Supergirl. Cat makes the suggestion that what she can do as Kara and what she can do as Supergirl don't have to be separate. Kara then makes the choice that she could take the Editor-in-Chief job but as Kara Zor-El. Without a secret identity, she won't have to make excuses to rush off and save people. Still not totally convinced, Lena encourages Kara to make the jump and take off her glasses. As Kelly and Alex leave for their honeymoon, Kara takes off her glasses for the last time.

We are treated to the season six cast all enjoying another game night seemingly after Kelly and Alex's honeymoon, the final scene, that of Cat Grant interviewing Kara aka Supergirl to the world!

Happy to see that I am not the only one missing SuperGirl . Melissa Benoist has the most magnetic personality and I really miss seeing her as SuperGirl. I am in total agreement that she is the best SuperGirl ever and it would be so wonderful if they even did a follow up TV movie so that we could see how SuperGirl (Melissa) is working out with being chief editor and SuperGirl and everyone now knowing that Kara Danvers is Supergirl. I still can't believe that they didn't do a spin off Midvale series of Alex and Kara Danvers growing up and the adventures they got into.
#96 I'm still grieving a little that the show is over.Quint 2022-04-15 15:49
Superman and Lois is pretty good. But... I am really missing Supergirl. I know it had to end although I am not sure why really but dambit... it really bums me out. Melissa has been the best Supergirl there ever was. Maybe she wanted to move along. Maybe it got expensive for the producers to pay the actors and such but I'm still mad about it ending. It seems the really really good shows have to end so there can be more crap like the bachelor and such types of reality shows that is really just garbage. Shows like Timeline, Manifest and many more great shows end.

Admin, only if you feel like it, now that the series has ended would you consider doing some polls like the ones that were done after Season 4?.

I can work on something like that sure

Cheers, there may be some popular episodes from Season 5 and 6 (thinking the 100th and Series finale) that may make into the Top 5 so it would be interesting to see. I do realise that there may not be many members that still visit the site but one never knows. Thks.

All I want to say is that I just got the Blu Ray DVD set. Please get the set - there are deleted scenes you do not want to miss as well as a copy of the SuperGirl Tribute.

I'm about a week away from getting the DVD set. Can you tell me how many of the deleted scenes (which I always watch first) feature Kara/Supergirl?.

Hi Kiwi - Disk 1 has no deleted scenes. Disk 2 has four scenes that contain either Alex, Supergirl or both. Disk 3 has two deleted scenes that contain SuperGirl/Kara. Disk 4 has four deleted scenes which contain either Alex, SuperGirl/Kara or both. It is Disc 2, scene 5 that you will love (contains Alex, Kara and J'onn). It is also Disk 4, scene 3 that you will also love (SuperGirl and Esme)

I have got the Final Season of the Series on Blu-Ray, I must admit that i was hoping for a few more Bonus Features, like goofs etc. Still happy that i got it though.

I was surprised there wasn't a gag reel but the set was worth it if only for two of the deleted scenes and the tribute being on there. Would be neat if they came out with a DVD that had all the gag reels for all the seasons combined on the one DVD. I also wish they would come out with a DVD that has all the yearly specials that the stars of the different shows came together for (i.e. Crisis).
