Decided to start a new thread for Season 4 focusing on our titular character and lead actress.

The thread is for discussion on the character of Kara Danvers/Supergirl, anything about Melissa (interviews etc.) and also about the Red Daughter (call her that for now until we know more) character Melissa will play.

I'm hoping for a really good story for Kara/Supergirl in Season 4 but will be mainly watching for 2 things - 1) Supergirl being Super and 2)Reporter Kara for the entire season.

Wasn't sure about posting these paparazzi photos of Melissa and Chris but they look so happy I thought that was really nice to see so here they are, see attached article for the pics.

Melissa's hair is nearly back to the length she wears it as Supergirl. I wonder if she'll go with a different hairstyle for Supergirl in Season 5?, personally I hope not as I like her hair as Supergirl nearly as much as I like her costume, her hairstyle as Supergirl hasn't changed in 4 years as you can see from the attached photos from S1 E1 and S4 E22.
It's nice to see them both happy and well.:D

Meissa's hair grows pretty quickly. The bangs have grown to a point where she needs to decide to either trim them to maintain the style or let them grow and push them back like she is in these pictures. Like many women before her she may be finding that bangs are more fun in concept than actually a style to live with. The style actually requires quite a bit of maintenance especially for particularly active people. Some people, myself included, actually find they don't like the feeling hair so close to their eyes but that's something you can't know beforehand and for some reason is easily forgotten. I've had bangs cut a few times in my life and pretty quickly regretted the decision and been grateful my hair grows quickly. To spite regretting it every few years I still think bangs would be fun only to have a friend or family member remind me of the reasons the style isn't a good one for me. The length will still be quite a bit shorter than the finale and likely shorter than it's been on the show but I actually like the shorter length. Bottom line assuming she doesn't cut it in the next few weeks I don't see Kara's look drastically changing. It'll be more like Kara got her hair cut a bit shorter than usual. We'll know for sure once filming starts and David posts his usual BTS shots and of course there's SCDD in six weeks.

The 5 Best Arrowverse Moments from the 2018-19 TV Season, from rottentomatoes.com.

I like the Supergirl choice on this list as it was definitely one of Melissa's funniest moments from Season 4 (including the crossover episodes) :) .

" 5. Kara Imitates the Green Arrow

Admittedly, this moment is included because we like dorky Kara. With her own storylines leaving little room for dorkiness this year, our key moment with Supergirl comes from part one of the “Elseworlds” crossover with Arrow and The Flash. After Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) wake up to discover they have switched lives, they devise a plan to visit Kara on Earth-38 and prove the switch is, in fact, occurring. The duo land on the Kent farm (where Smallville’s theme song happens to be playing) and meet Kara’s cousin Clark (Tyler Hoechlin).

Kara recognizes them as their usual selves, but their abilities are still switched. As they begin to train for their new power sets, Kara jokes about Barry taking on Oliver’s persona. She imitates his gruff voice by saying, “I’m the Green Arrow,” and then beams with a gloriously dorky smile.

This season, Kara had been frowning through most of her solo adventures as a tide of anti-alien sentiment swept the country. And just before Barry and Ollie’s arrival, Clark told her he was going to on a long-term visit to Argo, leaving her as Earth’s defender. Thus, this brief moment of a carefree Kara goofing with her friends was a welcome reminder of why we like her in the first place. Beyond her powers and duty, Kara Danvers is a total nerd. "

No argument from me here. I hope a little more of the adorkable Kara comes back next season.

Here's a really nice read on Melissa's awesome acting as Kara/Supergirl/Red Daughter in Season 4.
Good article, totally agree. The writer has also answered the question of what Kara's arc and growth is this season.
What happens when you don’t trust your heroes anymore? What if you have to save people who, in turn, don’t want to be saved at all? That’s where Supergirl found herself with humanity, and for Benoist as a performer, this obviously put her in a spot where she had to be conflicted. She had to reexamine who she was and that allowed her to find a new layer of introspection in the character’s performance.
This has been especially true since episode 17 but has really been happening since Supergirl discovered Mercy's and Otis's servers in the first episode.

Well, she has blue eyes not hazel....lol, but with the eye makeup I can see the mistake. Love the dress, purse, etc....but the eye makeup....I just like her in less makeup, it's always weird seeing her with the shadow eyes.

Yeah, I agree. She's prettier with less makeup. This doesn't seem to be her normal style, but I guess it was a Glam event.

Melissa attended the Dior Beauty Pop-Up in Los Angeles on Wednesday (May 8).

"Supergirl Melissa Benoist looked like a work of art in a flowing maxi dress with painted rosebuds.

Bringing out her hazel eyes with a hue of rose gold eye shadow, Melissa looked stunning as she posed up a storm with her hair pulled back into a chic up 'do.

She completed the look with an artistic cross body purse."

She's at it again! From her Instagram

This was not from the episode @davidharewood directed, but our amateur Fosse choreo exhibits the joy I feel working with him. So proud of my amazing friend and how effortlessly he puts on different artist hats ♥️♥️
.

You know Melissa, as you are from Colorado, please do not stop with this "Pike's Peak" worth of your silliness :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hope you get the reference.

I agree with you Kiwi. I don't think they are saving the story for next season and I don't think there is any need.

I think we would still have some red daughter scenes and if done well, those would be good enough to tie the story together.

And the cast needs to have their rest, so while it may be challenging, pulling double-duty for large numbers of episodes would not be possible for any actor. So, I am happy, mostly with the screen time.

I don't think the show should have so many extraneous stories though. They could manage the screen time while reducing the story lines and characters, surely? But, may be that is not for this thread.

Hi SSAV, thanks for your response. If you have ideas about how this can be achieved then please do share (either in this thread or start your own about Season 5 if you wish), I'd be most interested to read your thoughts. What I'm looking for is how they can balance Kara/Supergirl being the central character and driving the majority of the story-lines (in every season I think there should be at least 1 story about Kara and 1 story about Supergirl) with not overworking Melissa. What is the ideal Kara/Supergirl (Melissa) screen-time to achieve this while reducing characters and story-lines?.

While I can accept having multiple heroes (Supergirl doesn't really need anyone else, she should be capable and strong enough to handle most situations on her own especially with now 4 years experience) on the show to ease Melissa's workload I'm less accepting when it's part of the story (which could account for her reduced action in Season 4).

It was just so refreshing in Episode 18 to see Supergirl get all of the action, the fight scenes had a nice mix of Melissa and her stunt double Jennifer thus sharing the workload.

There's been some discussion in a news item about Melissa playing Red Daughter, thought I would bring it here for some further discussion.

My question is do you think the EP's should have deffered the RD story till Season 5, not gone ahead with it at all (meaning deleted it from the end of the Season 3 Finale) or has it been just about right with what we've seen so far in Season 4?.

Thinking of the timeline, the Season 3 finale probably would've been written about March 2018 (possibly before Melissa was offered the Broadway gig) but it wasn't screened till June 18, 2018. From what I can trace Melissa was announced as appearing on Broadway towards the end of April 2018 so that may have given the EP's (who probably knew of the Broadway gig a couple of weeks before the public) time to think ahead that she wouldn't have the same amount of time to play RD to perhaps do the story justice (as she has to majority play Kara/Supergirl) and remove the RD tease from the Season 3 finale.

Personally I'm happy with what I've seen of RD this season (given Melissa's outstanding performance in Episode 16) and that the story exists. I'll be honest and say a little more of her would've been nice through the season but I do understand the need to look after Melissa's well-being and not overwork her plus I still watch the show for Kara/Supergirl and not alternate versions of her (as nice as they are from time to time just because Melissa is such a great actress, it wouldn't have been a worry for me if there was no Red Daughter story). For that reason I'm comfortable if we only get one scene between Supergirl and Red Daughter (with how much work that requires of Melissa) and just 1 RD appearance in Season 5.

Perhaps a further question to ask is what do you feel is the ideal screen-time for Melissa in an episode?. Based on a approx. 40 minutes run time say 10,15,20 or 25 minutes?. Personally I think 20 minutes (half the episode) is about right in managing her work-load. While I would love to see her Season 1 screen-time percentage (about 66 or 2/3rds of an episode) again I realise that was pretty exhausting for her so we won't see that happen.
