Decided to start a new thread for Season 4 focusing on our titular character and lead actress.

The thread is for discussion on the character of Kara Danvers/Supergirl, anything about Melissa (interviews etc.) and also about the Red Daughter (call her that for now until we know more) character Melissa will play.

I'm hoping for a really good story for Kara/Supergirl in Season 4 but will be mainly watching for 2 things - 1) Supergirl being Super and 2)Reporter Kara for the entire season.

she seems not only more energized but more relaxed. I suspect some of the BTS tensions from the past are resolved and they can all focus on what is really important for the show going forward.

For some light-hearted fun, Sully in another thread said "some were kind of fun, like keeping track of the types of food that Kara ate" which got me to searching and I came across a couple of videos for your enjoyment plus a couple of photos of my favourite way of Kara cooking, heat vision :) .

Now that the 1st part of Season 4 has been completed I have a few musings on Kara/Supergirl and a few hopes for the rest of the season.

Firstly I want to say that I think Melissa put in some long hours to get the screen-time she did particularly in Episodes 4 and 7. Obviously her screen-time isn't quite where I would like it but that should be back to normal from Episode 10 onwards. Considering she started a month after everyone else I felt we got more of her than I thought we would. So thanks for your hard work Mel.

I was mostly pretty happy with what I saw of Kara/Supergirl in the 1st 8 episodes (particularly Episode 1, see my post further down this thread). To start the season with a montage of Superheroics was pure joy and the use of her superpowers in a few different ways (see Episode 2) this season has been nice to watch. I have enjoyed the flying this season as I think we've seen more close ups of Melissa rather than a CGI streak in the sky, more great work thanks Mel. My disappointment in regards to Supergirl was seeing her in a coma again in Episode 3 (a episode in which I thought would've been the perfect opportunity to do another flashback to Kara's early years like the Midvale episode in Season 3).

It was definitely nice to see Kara back at Catco more often and doing her job (although that only really got focus in Episode 5). Also nice to see Kara @ home scenes, they are what I term comfort scenes and give me some genuine warmth.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season I hope to see Supergirl continuing to be Super (always the most important thing to me), more of Kara @ Catco and doing her reporter job, more of Kara @ home (maybe that's where sister scenes can occur from now on if Supergirl stays separate from the D.E.O. for awhile) and some more Kara and Brainy scenes would be nice.

Thinking ahead to the Red Daughter story-line I hope it's Kara/Supergirl that finds out about her first, it's Kara/Supergirl that investigates it further and it's Kara/Supergirl that comes up with the solution of either merging with or defeating her, some assistance from Brainy would be fine. Red Daughter just needs to be about Kara/Supergirl only IMHO.

Always interested to hear others thoughts on the character of Kara/Supergirl so far in Season 4 and looking ahead to what you might like to see from or about her in the remaining 13 episodes.

Really nice that Kara has a photo of her and Streaky on her Catco work desk. Photo comes from Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco.

Supergirl dancing?
Well, I did write a fan fiction story in which the Supergirl Team goes on vacation at "Seagrape Island" (a thinly-disguised Seabrook Island, South Carolina). And Dick Malverne teaches Kara how to do the Shag, the official state dance of both Carolinas. In fact, I could have subtitled it "Supergirl Does the Shag"!
Here's a link to it on my Facebook page:

From Spoiler TV - Performers Of The Month - Readers' Choice Most Outstanding Performer of October 2018 - Melissa Benoist.

A well-deserved recognition!

I was thinking about Melissa as I read this article, specifically when it discusses her ability to convey feelings with small changes in expression, posture, etc. Someone (perhaps it was in a comment in this Forum) once called her the "woman of a thousand faces," or something like that. I have been amazed at how different she can look in different roles. For example, her portrayal of Kara/Supergirl is often compared with Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman, and that is certainly true in terms of tone. But the glasses Clark wore were never a convincing disguise, IMO. However when Melissa wears the glasses she looks like a completely different person. Also when she portrays Kara without the glasses she does not look the same as she does when portraying Supergirl. So she exhibits three distinct visages just within the main character. Additionally, when she played Red-K Kara or Overgirl, her face took on a different expression. And when she is in different roles entirely, such as Carole King or Rachel Koresh, there is yet another visage. I sometimes have to look very intently to make sure it is actually her, LOL. It's a remarkable, even unique talent, and I cannot think of another actor who can do this so convincingly. The writer is correct: the sky truly is the limit for Melissa.

This is the sentence that stood out for me.
Following and perhaps due to a successful run on Broadway, Benoist has given Supergirl even greater growth and polish with deeper, richer acting.
Successful doesn't fully describe her Broadway run. Most actors don't make their Broadway debut as the star of the show. It's not typical for an actor to get their portrait at Sardi's with their debut. Sardi's restaurant is a sacred place to Broadway actors and It's considered a huge honor for an actor to have their caricature there. Melissa actually wrote "what an honor" when she signed her portrait. Melissa said at SDCC that her Broadway experience has added a different perspective to how she plays Kara and our Admis said in their spoiler free review of the season premier that " whatever magic Melissa found on the Broadway stage has made its way back to Vancouver."
I'm not that familiar with how Broadway works so, I wasn't aware that Melissa's accomplishments there were as unique as they appear to be. It really is amazing how quickly she has been able to establish a name for herself as a well-respected actress, especially when one thinks about the fact that she basically got dropped from Glee only a few years ago. It says a lot about her work ethic and talent.

I am just hoping to get some scenes where Melissa is able to show off that "deeper, richer acting" - something she can sink her teeth into and gives her room to breathe in it for a bit.
all three actresses are to be commended on running through the atrium in high heels to get away Mercy's goons. How no one turned or broke an ankle is a mystery.
To those who've never worn high heels, trust me this is no laughing matter. Running in heels is a delicate balancing act and due respect and awe should be shown for those who can do it. There's the saying Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels. In Duet Melissa did the same tap moves that Grant did but in heels.
"Hear, hear". My mother wore high heels so much that all of her toes are now permanently bent in, toward her arch and squeezed together.

WHEW! What a detailed article from what I scanned over. And congrats are in order.

One of the things that endeared fans to Reeves' portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman was a charming, geeky awkwardness he embodied in the Clark Kent character. Benoist pays homage to that awkwardness but gives us something not seen much with Reeves portrayal and that’s the frustration of not being able to slip away to become Supergirl to protect her friends. Benoist is masterful, showing impeccable comedic timing during these scenes. Just another indication of how much Benoist has grown into this role since being cast.

I would concur with this statement, and perhaps also a little of George Reeves on TV in the 1950's as Kent and Superman.

And in reference to Melissa, Katie McGrath and Andrea Brooks in a recent episode...

all three actresses are to be commended on running through the atrium in high heels to get away Mercy's goons. How no one turned or broke an ankle is a mystery.

From tvline.com, Supergirl's Melissa Benoist: Season 4 Opts for Empowerment Over Romance.

Part of the article:
"And then there’s the “other” Kara, first introduced at the end of the show’s third season finale. Referring to her as “Red Daughter,” Benoist says, “I haven’t really gotten to know her yet fully,” but confirms, “I have spoken some Russian” in the role."

I like that Melissa calls her Red Daughter and I'll look forward to hearing her speak Russian. Melissa uses the words I have so that indicates to me we'll see some more of Red Daughter within the 1st 8 episodes.

From tvline.com:

In Season 3B, there was a bit of a rocky storyline between Supergirl and Lena. In Season 4, will they be able to repair that and continue to work together? —Victoria

“Their arc and their story as friends is a slow burn…,” Melissa Benoist told us at The CW’s Fall Launch event. “I can’t say where I think/I know it’s headed, but… it’s a Lex Luthor and a Superman story.” Benoist promised that we’ll still see lighter moments ‘tween her and Katie McGrath (“Kara and Lena are the best of friends”), though “a secret identity in the midst is not exactly a good ingredient for a friendship with a Luthor!” she notes with a laugh.
