Decided to start a new thread for Season 4 focusing on our titular character and lead actress.

The thread is for discussion on the character of Kara Danvers/Supergirl, anything about Melissa (interviews etc.) and also about the Red Daughter (call her that for now until we know more) character Melissa will play.

I'm hoping for a really good story for Kara/Supergirl in Season 4 but will be mainly watching for 2 things - 1) Supergirl being Super and 2)Reporter Kara for the entire season.

Now here's a good "goofball Kara" panel from an issue of Jimmy Olsen comics!
(Yes, in the comics, Kara likes knitting:)
That's the original Jimmy, of course. And he's right - in the comics, Kara was indeed trained in martial arts by Wonder Woman. (On the TV show, that role was given to Alex in season 1.) And the comic-book Kara also went to the future on more than one occasion with the Legion of Superheroes!

Kara needs to permanently part ways with the DEO on ‘Supergirl’, from hypable.com.

This article closely matches my own views on this. It's time I feel for Kara to show us her intelligence and start solving cases with her support network being J'onn, Alex and Brainy. Probably won't happen in Season 4 but they could start Season 5 afresh with no D.E.O.

Still hoping that it's Kara that hears about Red Daughter first, investigates it further and comes up with the solution to defeating or merging with her. Make Red Daughter a Supergirl only story.

Melissa and her dog Farley. So much cuteness in this photo posted by Melissa earlier today (Jan 16) on her Instagram.

What's interesting is Melissa is wearing Lena Luthor's special Supergirl suit as seen in Episode 4. Now it's probable this photo was taken during filming of Episode 4 but if it was taken this week (beginning Jan 14) are we going to see Kara wear that suit again sometime in Season 4?. Would anyone like to see her wear it again?.

I'm a big fan of her current suit and don't want any change but I must say that Melissa does look good in the suit as seen in the picture.

Total cuteness indeed...and like you I do like the what I will now call the "main" suit on Melissa, and she had some pics of her with her dogs like Milli.

But...I would love to see Melissa in the main suit...just be with some Golden Retriever puppies. They would be all over her, she would laugh and the cute scales would explode.

@Kiwi - I saw that video earlier. It's a good one and I enjoyed watching it again! :) Thanks for sharing.

For some light-hearted fun, Sully in another thread said "some were kind of fun, like keeping track of the types of food that Kara ate" which got me to searching and I came across a couple of videos for your enjoyment plus a couple of photos of my favourite way of Kara cooking, heat vision :) .
I love that scene with Barry going to get ice cream. Kara's reaction is priceless :D . I hadn't seen the other one. That was pretty good. They don't seem to focus as much on food on the CW like they did on CBS. Guess it must be more important to watch one's diet and figure on the CW :p .

You know that made me think of another song...a rather silly novelty song from 1976, reaching #9 on the Billboard charts, a little thing called Junk Food Junkie, by Larry Groce (good Lord have pity on me!)
I can honestly say that I've never heard that song before Robert. That was really, uh, something :D . Thanks for sharing!

Sully...YOU'RE WELCOME! (LOL!) I guess I am a bit crazy that way :p :p :p :p

Happy 2019 to all who read this. Looking forward to another year of enjoyment watching our girl Kara Zor-El as so wonderfully portrayed by Melissa :) .

2019 has a few milestones for the character, show and this website:

- On the 31st of March it will be Supergirl's 60th Birthday :). Action Comics # 252 (cover attached) was released on 31 March 1959.

- In September it will be 5 years since the show was 1st announced (Deadline) as being in development. As a Supergirl fan I was pretty excited to read this at the time and to think that in September we would've had 4 seasons and 87 episodes, it's been such an enjoyable ride with Kara/Supergirl.

- In November Supergirl.tv will celebrate it's 5th birthday (1st news article dated 6 November 2014). I've been reading this website since about then and been a member since May 2016, it's been nice to have a place where I can share my love of Supergirl with others who are fans of her and I've made a few friends along the way. So thanks again Eric and Kelsey for creating the website.

If anyone (my thoughts are 8 posts below this) has any hopes/dreams/thoughts/wishes for the character of Kara/Supergirl in 2019 then please share, I enjoy reading what others (both internally and externally) have to say like this from cartermatt.com "Kara Danvers – We want to see what she looks like as a bit more of an independent hero. We know that she’s no longer in the employ of the DEO, but we have a really-hard time imagining that she’s suddenly going to put down the mantel of superhero and stop helping people."

The Stew, a short film directed (and written?) by Chris Wood starring Melissa and Carlos Valdes (plays Cisco on The Flash) will premiere at the Vancouver Short Film Festival on January 26,2019.

The film is described as:
A husband and wife stubbornly soldier on through an unhappy marriage, despite the poison their relationship has become. The Stew is an offbeat comedy simmering with passive-aggression and absurdity in a stylized 1970s world, reminding us of a very important lesson: what you put out into the world will always find its way back to you.

Does anyone know if you can purchase these short films online after their festival runs?. I would like to watch it because it's Melissa but don't really know if I'll ever get that opportunity.

she seems not only more energized but more relaxed. I suspect some of the BTS tensions from the past are resolved and they can all focus on what is really important for the show going forward.

Now that the 1st part of Season 4 has been completed I have a few musings on Kara/Supergirl and a few hopes for the rest of the season.

Firstly I want to say that I think Melissa put in some long hours to get the screen-time she did particularly in Episodes 4 and 7. Obviously her screen-time isn't quite where I would like it but that should be back to normal from Episode 10 onwards. Considering she started a month after everyone else I felt we got more of her than I thought we would. So thanks for your hard work Mel.

I was mostly pretty happy with what I saw of Kara/Supergirl in the 1st 8 episodes (particularly Episode 1, see my post further down this thread). To start the season with a montage of Superheroics was pure joy and the use of her superpowers in a few different ways (see Episode 2) this season has been nice to watch. I have enjoyed the flying this season as I think we've seen more close ups of Melissa rather than a CGI streak in the sky, more great work thanks Mel. My disappointment in regards to Supergirl was seeing her in a coma again in Episode 3 (a episode in which I thought would've been the perfect opportunity to do another flashback to Kara's early years like the Midvale episode in Season 3).

It was definitely nice to see Kara back at Catco more often and doing her job (although that only really got focus in Episode 5). Also nice to see Kara @ home scenes, they are what I term comfort scenes and give me some genuine warmth.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season I hope to see Supergirl continuing to be Super (always the most important thing to me), more of Kara @ Catco and doing her reporter job, more of Kara @ home (maybe that's where sister scenes can occur from now on if Supergirl stays separate from the D.E.O. for awhile) and some more Kara and Brainy scenes would be nice.

Thinking ahead to the Red Daughter story-line I hope it's Kara/Supergirl that finds out about her first, it's Kara/Supergirl that investigates it further and it's Kara/Supergirl that comes up with the solution of either merging with or defeating her, some assistance from Brainy would be fine. Red Daughter just needs to be about Kara/Supergirl only IMHO.

Always interested to hear others thoughts on the character of Kara/Supergirl so far in Season 4 and looking ahead to what you might like to see from or about her in the remaining 13 episodes.

Really nice that Kara has a photo of her and Streaky on her Catco work desk. Photo comes from Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco.

Supergirl dancing?
Well, I did write a fan fiction story in which the Supergirl Team goes on vacation at "Seagrape Island" (a thinly-disguised Seabrook Island, South Carolina). And Dick Malverne teaches Kara how to do the Shag, the official state dance of both Carolinas. In fact, I could have subtitled it "Supergirl Does the Shag"!
Here's a link to it on my Facebook page:

From Spoiler TV - Performers Of The Month - Readers' Choice Most Outstanding Performer of October 2018 - Melissa Benoist.

A well-deserved recognition!

I was thinking about Melissa as I read this article, specifically when it discusses her ability to convey feelings with small changes in expression, posture, etc. Someone (perhaps it was in a comment in this Forum) once called her the "woman of a thousand faces," or something like that. I have been amazed at how different she can look in different roles. For example, her portrayal of Kara/Supergirl is often compared with Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman, and that is certainly true in terms of tone. But the glasses Clark wore were never a convincing disguise, IMO. However when Melissa wears the glasses she looks like a completely different person. Also when she portrays Kara without the glasses she does not look the same as she does when portraying Supergirl. So she exhibits three distinct visages just within the main character. Additionally, when she played Red-K Kara or Overgirl, her face took on a different expression. And when she is in different roles entirely, such as Carole King or Rachel Koresh, there is yet another visage. I sometimes have to look very intently to make sure it is actually her, LOL. It's a remarkable, even unique talent, and I cannot think of another actor who can do this so convincingly. The writer is correct: the sky truly is the limit for Melissa.
